Dorothy Margaret Gappa, age 96, of Alpena passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 14, 2018, at Jessie's Place AFC Home in Alpena, Michigan.
On August 18, 1921, Dorothy was born in Black River, Michigan to the late Albert and Eva Benson. Dorothy married Robert J. Gappa on February 28, 1938, at St. Gabriel's Catholic Church in Black River, Michigan. They were married for 60 years before Robert preceded her in death on September 23, 1999. Her and her husband owned and operated Gappa's Market for 42 years, retiring in 1973. She was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church and their Rosary Society.
Dorothy is survived by her three children: Donald (Barbara) Gappa; Mary Anne (Roger) Anderson both of Alpena, MI; and Dorene Gappa of Greensboro, NC; nine grandchildren: Lynette (Darrell) Lipski, Kristen (Robert) Singer, Laura (Jack) Smith, David (Terry) Gappa, Jamie (Kelly) Gappa, Sarah Gappa, Deborah (Dirk) Fennie, Sandra Filarski and Audrey (Zac) Durham; 17 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son Robert Gappa, two grandsons: Daniel Anderson and Philip Filarski, two granddaughters: Lisa Marie Gappa and Julie Anderson, one brother Howard Benson, three sisters Rose Alexander, Gloria Sanford, and Verna Travis.
