John McNutt was born 20 December 1801 in Tennessee to Alexander and Elizabeth Tilghman McNutt. As a young child, his immediate and extended family as well as close family friends migrated to the wilderness of Preble County, Ohio.
John's father, Alexander, and an uncle preceded the family to stake out land and make preparations for the large party to follow.

John spent his childhood in the wilderness of Preble County with his nuclear family, his extended family, and the other settlers of Preble County. During his childhood, he and his siblings helped with the many chores of making a homestead in the wilderness of Ohio, but still had time to explore the wonders of nature.

As a young man, John married his sweetheart, Magdalen (Vance) Wantz, on 3 July 1825. He and his bride then went to work building the their homestead in Preble County. To this union were born three children, Sarah McNutt, Mary McNutt, and Alexander McNutt. Tragedy struck the McNutt family when Magdalen died on 11 August 1846.

Shortly after his wife died, members of the Strangite Mormon group visited Preble County on a recruiting mission. John, his brothers, Tobias and Jacob and their sister, Elizabeth "Betsey" McNutt were amongst the many converts in Preble County as a result of this mission.

John, Tobias, Jacob, and Betsey moved to the Kingdom on Beaver Island which was off the coast of Northwest Michigan. During his time on Beaver Island, John met and married his second wife, Mary Jane Whitlock, and Mary Jane gave birth to their only child, Elnora Jane McNutt.

John, Tobias and their families carved out a homestead on the island only to see their Kingdom disintegrate after the assassination of their leader, James Jesse Strang. After Strang was put on a steamer headed to Voree, Wisconsin, the Irish fishermen and several former disgruntled members of the group forced the Strangite Mormons off the island at gunpoint.

John, Tobias, and their families defied the angry mob and refused to leave their homestead. They stayed on Beaver Island until Tobias became gravely ill and the families moved him to Voree, Wisconsin.

After Tobias passed away at Voree, Wisconsin, Uncle John took care of his family, Tobias' family, and his sister's (Elizabeth McNutt Strang) family as well as the family of Elvira Field Strang. The families became nomads for a number of years moving between Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Canada.

John, Elizabeth, and Mary McNutt (Tobias' wife) settled in the Mormon Settlement of Jackson, County, Wisconsin, where they continued to be active members of the group until it slowly disintegrated with families moving closer to the epicenter of their religion.
