James O. Akins, 100
James O. Akins, age 100, of Jackson, Mich., and Petoskey, passed away on Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at Hiland Cottage in Petoskey.
Jim was born Sept. 4, 1912, in Trezevant, Tenn., the son of Franklin Akins and Cora (Argo) Akins.
Over the years, Jim worked at many different occupations. As a young man, he farmed and worked with Civilian Conservation Corps during the Great Depression. Later, he worked as a civilian airplane mechanic in Mobile, Ala., during World War II, then in maintenance with the Jackson Public Schools.
In his later years, he enjoyed building bird houses and other small craft items. He also loved telling stories and talking about his many years of experiences and about his family.
Jim is survived by his children, Sonja Hill and Ernest Akins; grandchildren, Jennifer (Mark) Dawson, Catherine (Neil) Britton, David, Patrick, Michael and Jamie Bechtol; great-grandchildren, Michael, Elizabeth, Abigail and Emily.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father and his son, J. David Akins.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hiland Cottage or Hospice of Little Traverse Bay, Petoskey.
A memorial service will take place at 4 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at Harbor Light Community Chapel.
