According to Lawrence's Veteran's Compensation application filed in 1934, Lawrence was the son of Lilly (Huber) and John H. Custer. His wife was Laura (Hoffman) Custer. He had two children, Eleanor and Richard. Lawrence was a veteran of WWI having served in France. He participated in the Sector 305 Defensive and the Meuse Argonne Offensive. He served from May 25, 1918 to May 30, 1919 and was wounded in the hand. He was a cabinet maker and lived at various addresses in Boyertown.
