son of Sarah Katharine and Elliot Christopher Cowdin

Enlisted, 1892, in Troop A Cavalry, NYNG, New York City. He saw field service with Troop A Cavalry during the Buffalo Switchmen's Strike, August 1892 and the Brooklyn Trolley Strike, January 1895. When Troop A was reorganized into Squadron A, February 5, 1895, he was assigned to Troop 1, Squadron A. He was discharged from Squadron A in 1897.

Commissioned, 1st Lieutenant, Infantry, May 2, 1898, assigned to the 12th NY Infantry Regiment. The 12th NY Volunteer Infantry mustered in for Spanish American War service, May 13, 1898. He served as the Quartermaster and Adjutant till his discharged, October 28, 1898.

His nephew John Cheever Cowdin was a member of Squadron A, 1908 - 1909.
