Bage was the son of Charlotte Coleman Harmon and William Brucker Charter; brother of Opal, Willie, Alfred, Joe, Mary, Lottie, Geneva, Nancy and Tommy Charter.

Bage entered active service on September 11, 1942, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. At the time, he was living in Tucumcari, New Mexico. He served aboard the U.S.S. Core (CVE-13) and was honorably discharged on January 24, 1946, in San Pedro, CA, with the rank of Aviation Boatswain's Mate (Gasoline), 3rd Class.
