Robert R. Fortune, 89, of Bethlehem, formerly of Allentown, died Tuesday, April 25, 2006, in his home.

He was the husband of Christine (Dent) Fortune.

His career began in 1940 following his graduation that year from the University of Pennsylvania Wharton School with a degree as a Certified Public Accountant. His first commercial association was with the accounting firm of Haskins and Sells, Philadelphia, Pa. From that start, he moved to the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company, whose headquarters was in Allentown. With PP&L, he served more than 35 years and at the date of his mandated retirement, top executives of the growing electric power and light company obtained special authority under corporate rules to retain his expertise and services for another two years.

The Marquis Publishing Company, Chicago, Illinois, has carried his name on the pages of their annual publication, Whos Who in America, since 1948.

Some of the firms where he served as representative of PP&L, either as an officer or as advisor to their financial strategy, were Independence Square Income Securities Inc., Associated Gas and Electric Insurance Services (AEGIS), Temp. Investment Fund Inc; Chestnut Street Cash Fund and Chestnut Street Exchange Fund; Portfolios for Diversified Investment; Prudential-Bach Income Vertible Plus Fund; and the PNC Fund. He also served as treasurer of the Allentown School District and the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority, for which he issued bonds to enable the enlargement of the airport.

He was a member of the Pennsylvania branch of the American Institute of CPAs, the Financial Executives of American, and the Republican Club of Lehigh County.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown.

Always physically active, Bob was elected captain of the 1940 United States Amateur Baseball Team, whose members played in Cuba during a substitute series held in lieu of the Olympic Games, which had been cancelled because of World War II.

Mr. Fortune served as a Lieutenant Commander in the Navy in the South Pacific Theatre during World War II, from 1942 to 1946.

He was the oldest of three children of Colon Canrobert and Minnie Merle (Brown) of Collingswood, N.J.

He was predeceased by his parents and sisters, Mrs. Edith Earle Thompson of Austin, Texas, and Mrs. Grace Glenn Banse of Manasquan, N.J.

Survivors: Wife, Christine (Dent) Fortune; nephews, Arthur Dent of Wilmington, Delaware, Wesley V. Banse Jr. of Vorhees Township, N.J., Glen Fortune Banse of Brick, N.J., Jay Britt Thompson of Austin, Texas; nieces, Mrs. Evelyn Rice of Atco, N.J., Mrs. Carole Banse-Doyon of Scotland Neck, N.C.; brother-in-law, Lt. Colonel Wesley V. Banse Sr. of Scotland Neck.

Services: Graveside Service, 11:30 a.m. Tuesday, May 2, 2006, at Harleigh Cemetery, Camden, N.J.

Memorial Service, 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, 2006, in the main sanctuary of the First Presbyterian Church of Allentown, 3231 Tilghman St., Allentown.
