Max D. Foutz
1931 - 2018
VETERAN

Early Life: Max was born August 23, 1931, in Pima, Arizona, to Joseph Lehi and Lois Humphrey Foutz, the eleventh of twelve children. Born and raised in Pima, he later lived in Pima and Farmington, New Mexico. Max is now reunited with the mother he lost when he was only five years old. As a result of his mother's passing and his father's efforts to make a living during the height of the Great Depression, the task of raising Max and the other younger children fell upon the capable shoulders of his older siblings and other family members. Facing this challenge created a bond between the twelve Foutz children that was absolute.
Life's Work | Service | Interests: As the last of those twelve to complete their mortal journey, Max embodied and magnified the love, devotion, and willingness to serve that his family modeled throughout their lives and that has now been passed down by them to succeeding generations. In 1951, Max entered his military service in the United States Navy. He spent five years in active duty stationed in San Diego and Oppama, Japan, then spent 15 years in the Navy Reserves. During his service, Max was awarded the Good Conduct Medal, Korean Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Naval Reserve Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal – Pacific Area Theater and Asian Pacific Theater. On May 26, 1953, Max married Bernadine Kay Clark in the Mesa Arizona Temple. Eventually settling in Ukiah, California, he became a successful insurance salesman and the father of five. The family spent many summer evenings in Ukiah watching Max pitch softball games for the Foutz Insurance Agency team in Ukiah's fast-pitch softball league. Their sixth child was born after they moved to Bakersfield; then they moved to Saratoga Springs, Utah, in 2005. Max was an avid hunter, fisherman and all-around outdoorsman. He was a skilled abalone diver, storyteller, camper, game tracker, and cook who could barbecue chicken and corn for 500 or hamburgers for five. As members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Max and his posterity have served missions teaching the Gospel in Asia, Europe as well as North and South America. Max D. Foutz, loving father, husband and grandfather, passed away peacefully of natural causes on July 13, 2018, surrounded by his loving family. He was 86.
