Mary Lucille Werner, age 90, of Kouts, formerly of Wanatah, passed away Friday, July 13, 2018 at Porter Regional Hospital. She was born June 4, 1928 in Denver, CO to Wilhelm and Lydia Walters, who passed away when she was young. Mary then came to live with her aunt and uncle, Louis and Minnie (Jenkins) Walter in Wanatah. She graduated from Wanatah High School in 1946 and went on to attend nursing school. In 1947 in LaPorte, she married Willard L. Werner. Mary had served as Kouts clerk-treasurer for one year and worked as a secretary for Werner Heating and Air Conditioning for many years. Mary was a member of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Kouts where she was very active with the Ladies Aid and quilting group which distributed their beautiful hand made quilts to many different organizations. Upon retirement, Willard and Mary moved to Jones, Michigan where they enjoyed fishing and entertaining family and friends. She was a fabulous cook, cultivated beautiful flower and vegetable gardens, and was a very gentle person. She will be sorely missed. Mary is survived by her son; Andrew (Donna) Werner of Kouts, six grandchildren: Heather (Troy) Owens, Kelly and Amelia Werner, Shane, Jamie, Cody and Lindsey Corneil, and six great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two children: Randy Werner and Peggy Corneil and sister, Donavie Sommers. A graveside service will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery, Kouts on Tuesday, July 24, 2018 at 11:00 AM with Rev. Robert Hauter officiating. Memorials in Mary's name may be made to St. Paul Lutheran Church, Kouts. Kosanke Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
