Walter Haines passed away peacefully on May 8, 2018 in Medford, Oregon, at the age of 99. He was born February 10, 1919 in Sidney, Nebraska, to Phillip Clyde and Florence Agnes Haines.
Walter fondly remembered his childhood years spent in Denver, Colorado, guided by his parents, sister Clara, and extended family. As a young lieutenant in the Army Air Corps during World War II, he was captured in the Pacific and spent three and a half years as a prisoner of war in Indonesia. At the end of the war in 1945, he married Byrna Jean Simons, and they settled in Los Gatos, California. Together, they raised three daughters; Linda, Deborah, and Candace. After the war, Walter earned his Mechanical Engineering degree from San Jose State. He volunteered with Junior Achievement and many PTAs and was a member of the Los Gatos School Board.
Walter retired from IBM in 1979 and moved with his wife to Oregon. He enjoyed raising cows, tomatoes, apples, and raspberries, and pursuing his woodworking skills. He was very proud of the fish ladders he helped to construct as a member of the Rogue Flyfishers. In 2010, after the passing of his wife of 64 years, Walter became a volunteer with Medford Providence Hospice at the age of 91. Most recently, he and his good friend, Hugh Crawford, of the Medford VFW, advocated for the POW/MIA flag to be flown at public locations statewide in Oregon.
Walter was a firm and loving husband, parent, and grandparent. He made friends easily and was curious, creative, resourceful, intelligent, and always willing to lend a hand. He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his three daughters, son-in-law John Vial, grandchildren Matt and Kelly Vial and their spouses Amber and Roberto, great grandchildren Maya, Riley, Emmi, Katelyn and Owen, and nieces Sandra and Sue, and their families. His son-in-law, Dan Marshall, passed away May 18, 2018. Walter's Medford Providence Hospice "family" was very important to him, not only near the end of his life, but for the past eight years.
