Sandra “Sandy” (Ott) Herzinger, 78, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, and friend, passed away July 8, 2018. Sandy, born August 14, 1939 in Lincoln, was the only child of John and Mabel Ott. Sandy first met her future husband Morelle Herzinger in 1956, they reconnected at college, and starting in 1960, they were married for 50 years until his passing in 2011.
Sandy grew up in Lincoln and graduated from Lincoln High School in 1957. She continued her education earning a Bachelor of Arts from Nebraska Wesleyan and, in just 9 months, a Master of Arts in library science from the University of Illinois.
Sandy started her professional career as a junior librarian at Love Library in 1961 working at the circulation desk. After graduate school, she returned fulltime to UNL in 1965 and began her 38 year career there. She became Chair of the Cataloging Department in 1979. Her many accomplishments included overseeing the multiple year conversion of the library catalog from paper to digital format. Sandy received the University Libraries Staff Excellence Award in 1994, was promoted to full professor in 1995, and served many years on the faculty Senate. She retired from UNL in 2003. In 2014, she was awarded the inaugural Sandra Herzinger Award for Technical Services Advocacy for her lifelong dedication to Technical Services.
Sandy traveled extensively throughout her life visiting all 50 of the United States and many foreign countries. After many years of family camping vacations across the country, she found great enjoyment in cruising (on ocean liners, river boats, and trains) with her husband and later with friends. Special trips included the Bahamas, Alaska, Hawaii, European rivers, the Panama Canal, and a 50th wedding anniversary tour of England, Scotland, and Wales.
She was an avid reader with a particular fondness for mystery novels. She was an active member of Christ United Methodist Church in Lincoln. Although she was an only child, she married one of a group of 50+ first cousins and used her energy and organizational skills for many large Herzinger family events. She also found immense pleasure spending time with her granddaughter Elena, baking cinnamon rolls, assembling puzzles, and watching her perform on stage. Sandy’s warm, welcoming, sunny personality will be greatly missed.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
