James Lyle Barker was born on July 6, 1925, at Randolph, NE. He was the son of Charles and Ida (Hohneke) Barker. Jim graduated from Randolph High School. He served in the US Navy on the USS Louisville during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to Randolph. In 1946, Jim moved to Pomeroy and began working at the Pomeroy Creamery. On July 11, 1947, Jim married Arlene Gehrt at the Covenant Church. The couple made their home on their farm south of Pomeroy. Jim farmed and drove school bus for over thirty years. Arlene passed away in April of 1989. On August 7, 1993, Jim married Berniece Aljets. She passed away in August of 2008. Jim entered the Sunny Knoll Carer Center in July of 2012.
Jim was a member of the Covenant Church, the American Legion and the AMVETS. He enjoyed working word puzzles and watching baseball in his spare time.
Survivors include his children: Judy Madsen of Storm Lake, Verlin “Gus” (Deb) Barker of Ackley and Bonnie (Rex) Kozak of Marshalltown; ten grandchildren; many great-grandchildren and Berniece’s children, Fred, Gary, Linda and Randy.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his wives, son-in-law, Robert Madsen, two sisters and four brothers.
