After graduating high school, he joined the Navy and served as a radioman in World War II. After serving in the military his job with the FAA moved him to Alaska where he met his wife Bernice. Married on December 11, 1948. Along with seven children they moved to Auburn, WA. He later retired after more than thirty years as an air traffic controller with the FAA. Martin 's loving children, church family, gardening, the Seattle Mariners and his dog Mert brought him great joy during retirement.
Martin was preceded in death by his wife Bernice, daughter Linda, and granddaughter Stephanie. He is survived by his children Jenny Yingling, David (Kari), Mary, Wesley (Janice), Mark (Sandy), and James (Laura), nineteen grandchildren, along with many great-grandchildren and extended family and friends.
Interment with military honors at Tahoma National Cemetery.
