Lewis was son of Mahlon Rogers and Caroline Bourne.
He moved to Putnam County Indiana about 1853 with his father and family, Lewis was a Professor of Latin at DePauw University, Greencastle before then moving to Nashville,Tennessee and on to Atlanta, Georgia.
He married to Mary Brunton.
