Amos Ashe was born about 1801, in Lincoln County, North Carolina. He was the eldest child of Isaac Ashe (1786-1863).

Amos Ashe's first wife was his 1st cousin, Mary Polly "Mina" Ashe (1807-1841), in September 1823, in North Carolina. She was the daughter of Jesse Ashe and Anna Marie “Mary” Huffman Ashe. They had the following nine, known children:
Malinda (1824-?); Mary (1824-1915); Thomas (1827-1919); Sallie (1831-?); Sarah (1832-1908); Jesse (1834-?); William Henderson (1836-1862); Noah (1836-1899) and Hix Ashe (1839-?).

Amos Ashe married second, Rachel Malinda Frizzell (b. December 24, 1824- d. 1880), in Macon County, North Carolina on July 24, 1843 .
They had the following twelve, known children:
Henry (1843-1957); Margaret Melvina (1844-1908); John McDowell (1846-1926); Amos (1848-1952); Coleman Lester (1851-?); Amanda J. (1853-?); Rual Emaline (1853-?); Jason Robert (1855-1935); M. A. Ashe (1859-?); R. M. Ashe (1859-?); Ida Roxanna (1861-1938) and James Richardson Ashe (1866-1937).

Amos Ashe died in 1873 in Sylva, Jackson County, North Carolina. His widow, Rachel Malinda Ashe, passed 7 years later.
