Laverne Reed "Bunkie" Berry

Laverne Reed Berry, 97, of Swansea, South Carolina, known by family and friends as “Bunkie”, passed away on Friday, June 29, 2018. She was born on June 23, 1921 in North, South Carolina where she was raised. She was the last surviving member of her birth family of 17. She was predeceased by her parents, Stanmore Judson Reed and Mary Rebecca Pou “Minnie” Reed; sisters, Anna Ulmer, Pearl Inabinet, Mary Bonnette, and Myrtle Gurtrude Reed; brothers, Ivan, Theodore, Hudson, Richard and Harry; half-brothers, W.M. Reed, Sawyer Reed, George Reed and Tullie Reed; half-sisters, Llewellyn, Eulie and Marie. She was married in September, 1939 to the late H. Lee Berry of Swansea and was the co-owner of Berry’s Red & White Store in Swansea for 28 years. They raised three children, a son, James Reed (Sarah) Berry; and two daughters, Rebecca Kirkland and Linda (R.L.) Cassidy all of Swansea. Also surviving are grandchildren, Ray Kirkland, Kim (Tommy) Corley, both of Swansea, Lee (Kristie) Cassidy of West Columbia, Amanda (Russell) Lloyd of Gaston, and J.R. (Lisa) Berry of Lexington; great grandchildren, Alex Kirkland, Audrie and Thomas Ray Corley all of Swansea, Morgan Cassidy of Gaston, Savannah and Isabella Cassidy of West Columbia, Shelby and Austin Lloyd of Gaston, and J.W. Berry of Lexington; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a son-in-law, Donnie Kirkland of Swansea; and a grandson, Robert Todd Cassidy of Swansea.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 1, 2018 at Swansea First Baptist Church with Rev. Terry Wilder officiating. The casket will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in Melrose Memorial Garden in Swansea following the service.
In lieu of flowers, please make memorials to Swansea First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 550, Swansea, SC.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Saturday at Culler-McAlhany Funeral Home (www.mcalhanyfuneralhome.com) in North.
