Note: This is a replacement stone. It should say she died Feb. 6, 1693/4 (see original inscription below.) The double date reflects the shift from March 25 to Jan. 1 as the start of the year. Different countries adopted Jan. 1 at different times.

The first known recorded burial [in Rumney Marsh Burial ground] was that of Mary Smith, wife of Captain John Smith, a tenant farmer. Mary Smith was the daughter of James Bill, one of the first permanent residents of Pullin Point (Winthrop). Mary's husband, Captain John Smith, a military leader and inn keeper, died in 1706 at the age of 85 and was buried beside her.

Mary, ye wife of
Capt. John Smith,
aged about 48 years
dec'd Febr ye 6, 1693-4.

From Grant W. Sullivan: John and his 2nd wife, Mary (Bill) Smith had a daughter Phoebe (1673 - 1753). Phoebe married a John Brintnall (b. 1672, Boston, MA) in 1690.
