Graveside services were held for Elmer Toney, 68, Monday afternoon in the Cedarville Cemetery. The Rev. Fred Plocher conducted the service.

Elmer William Toney was born in Cedarville, California June 23, 1902, to Lemuel and Mary Toney, the second child in a family of three. After finishing his education in the Surprise Valley public schools, Elmer worked on several ranches in the Warner Valley of Oregon.

He was united in marriage with Mabel Banks of August 21, 1937, and they moved to Long Valley, Nevada where Elmer trapped and worked on the Sheldon Wild Life Refuge. Shortly after they moved to Long Valley, the Toneys bought the John Haven ranch and then began ranching in earnest. Elmer built a rock house on the ranch after their first house burned in 1945. In 1951 they sold their Long Valley ranch and purchased a ranch near Lake City, California where they farmed and raised cattle until 1966.

Elmer retired from ranching and with his wife moved to Palo Cedro where they lived for two years, returning to Surprise Valley to make their home in Fort Bidwell in 1968 where Elmer enjoyed the company of his many life-long friends and relatives.

While attending to business in the Redding area last week, Elmer William Toney died unexpectedly Thursday, January 21, 1971.
