On December 9, 1916, in Cook County, IL, Myrtle Crofoot married William Edwards, a native of England. Before 1922, a woman lost her U.S. citizenship by marrying a foreign man, because she assumed the nationality of the husband. In 1922, the Cable Act, also known as the Married Women's Independent Nationality Act, partially reversed the loss of citizenship for certain women thereafter. Women who had already lost their citizenship had to file a petition for naturalization to regain it.

Her husband, William Edwards, was naturalized on December 4, 1924. On December 11, 1924, Myrtle Edwards filed a petition for naturalization in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, which clearly states her date of birth, August 4, 1896, and place of birth in Park Ridge, IL. She received her certificate of naturalization on May 18, 1925.
