Former Sandy resident, Shirley Hatcher Smith was born on May 27, 1932 in Denver, Colorado to John and Eva (Pittman) Reynolds. As a young child, the family moved to Oregon and made their home in the Gresham area. Shirley received her education in Gresham and at the age of 14, the family returned to Colorado where she met her future husband.
On November 22, 1947, at the age of 15 she was married to Hugh “Red” Hatcher in Denver. The family lived in various areas in the Mid-West and began their family. In 1963, Shirley and Red moved to Oregon and made their home in Rockwood. In 1974, Red preceded her in death. Shirley remained in Rockwood and worked at Zim’s Twelve Mile Corner. In 1977, Shirley met Benjamin Smith. They were later married in Gresham on February 14, 1980. They made their home in Sandy where they opened their business, Ben’s Denture Center. He passed on October 25, 1996.
Shirley enjoyed playing the slots and Bingo and had a streak of good luck. She was a wonderful mom and grandma and her family had top priority. Shirley also enjoyed working in her flower garden.
Surviving are her children, Gary (Christine) Hatcher, John (Kathy) Hatcher, Steven (Cindy) Hatcher, Sandra (Dave) Miller, Kathleen (Rod) Cross, Douglas (Ann) Hatcher, David Hatcher and Curtis (Debbie) Hatcher; sister, Patricia Butler, 29 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren and 9 step children. Shirley is preceded in death by her sons, Charles and Daniel Hatcher.
