He was honorably discharged Dec. 1952 from the United States Navy after serving as a Sonarman on the USS Perkins deployed in the Korean War. He then attended Indiana Technical School earning a degree in Electrical Engineering, culminating in a successful 39-year career with American Electric Power, retiring in St. Joseph, Mich. in the mid 1990s. Throughout his life, he called home a 50-acre farm near Farmland, Ind. where he raised his five sons, St. Joseph, Mich. where he finished his career, and finally in Princeton, W.V. where he lived out his twilight years of retirement after the loss of his beloved wife Darlene. He was active in several community organizations, churches, and an avid golfer.
He was a caring father to five sons, Randal (Mary) of Princeton, Gregg (Nancie) of Red Rock, Ariz., (who preceded him in death in 2012), Brent (Jo) of Fort Worth, Texas; Todd (Lisa) of Pittsburgh, Pa., and Troy (Gina) of Birmingham, Ala; seven grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Wayne was also preceded in death by two sisters, Margene of Coshocton, Ohio, and Doris of Fort Wayne, Ind.
"Remembering him in his recliner eating ice cream he was loved by his incredible team of caregivers whose help was indispensable and appreciated by his family. We will all miss you Dad."
Funeral service is 5 p.m. Tuesday, June 19, 2018, at Seaver Funeral Home in Princeton, with visitation from 4 p.m. until the service hour. Reverend Ed Pettus officiating. Burial is 11 a.m. Thursday, June 21, 2018, at Greenlawn Memorial Park, Fort Wayne, Ind., where Wayne will be laid to rest once again beside his wife of 48 years Darlene. Military graveside rites will be conducted by the U.S. Navy Honor Guard.
