Battaile Fitzhugh Taliaferro Conway was born on September 14, 1814 at "Hawfield", Orange County, Virginia. He was the son of Catlett Conway Jr. (b. May 27, 1786, d. July 25, 1839) and Verlinda Taliaferro (b. July 1, 1784, d. May 26, 1815). B.T.F. Conway was a farmer in the Madison County, Virginia area all of his life and was the grandson of Capt. Catlett Conway who served on the staff of General Washington during the Revolutionary War. B.F.T. was married first to Mary Ann Wallace (d. October 1, 1843, Madison County, Virginia) on July 14, 1834 in Madison County, Virginia. She was the daughter of Michael and Mary Kelton (Glassell) Wallace of "Glen Wallace," Madison County, Virginia. B.F.T. married second to Cornelia Sapphira Buchanan (b. 07 Feb 1822, d. 06 Feb 1895), about 1844, daughter of Dr. William Buchanan and Mary Dade (Wallace) Buchanan of "Clear View," Falmouth, Stafford County, Virginia and a first cousin of President James Buchanan. B.F.T. had a very large family with his two wives. The children with his first wife Mary Ann Wallace Conway were: Verlinda Taliaferro Conway (b. 1835, d. 1852, age 17 from pneumonia while attending school at Buckingham Institute), Ellen Somerville Conway, Catlett Fitzhugh Conway (b. January 5, 1840, d. December 6, 1929) and Louise Roberta Conway (b. February 20, 1842, d. October 11, 1884). To B.F.T. and his second wife Cornelia Sapphira Buchanan Conway were born 8 children. Those known were: William Buchanan Conway (b. January 3, 1845, "Ellerslie", Madison County, Virginia, d. July 6, 1920, Atlanta, Fulton County, Georgia), Mary Ann Wallace Conway (b. December 19, 1846), Evalina (Eva) Fitzhugh Conway (b. September 15, 1849, d. January 31, 1934), Battaile Fitzhugh Taliaferro Conway (b. April 26, 1850, died in infancy), John Gibbons Conway (b. July 30, 1850, d. September 7, 1911), Cornelia Battaile Conway (b. August 15, 1853, d. June 30, 1930), William Henry Conway (b. June 1855), and Henry Clay Conway (b. June 1, 1856). Battaile Fitzhugh Taliaferro Conway died on July 15, 1897, Wolftown, Madison County, Virginia.
