Buried with Carol Geiger - no separate stone or inscription

Vernon H. Geiger retired in 1972 as a risk manager for Bell & Howell Co. after 40 years with the company.

In recent years, he volunteered with the Jackson & Perkins Co., growing and evaluating new varieties of roses before they were put on the market. In exchange for his service, Mr. Geiger was allowed to keep the rose bushes.

Mr. Geiger, 86, of North Olmsted, died of kidney failure Tuesday at the Manor Care nursing home in North Olmsted.

The Cleveland native lived most of his life in Lakewood. He was a resident of Westlake before moving to North Olmsted 11 years ago.

Mr. Geiger worked as a laborer on relatives' farms in Parma and Parma Heights as a teenager. He worked briefly at the May Co. in Cleveland after graduating from Lakewood High School.

During World War II, Mr. Geiger served with the Ohio Home Guard.

He often told his family about his work on a security detail at the East Ohio Gas Co. fire of 1944. Strictly following orders to prohibit people from going into dangerous areas, he refused to allow Cleveland Mayor Frank Lausche to pass through an area he was guarding. The mayor protested at first, but later commended Mr. Geiger for his dedication to public safety.

Mr. Geiger and his wife of 61 years, Ruth, had two children, Carole and William (1943-1973 Toledo, OH), who died of complications from diabetes as young adults.

Besides his wife, Mr. Geiger is survived by three grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, two brothers and a sister.

Memorial services will be scheduled at a later date.

Arrangements are by Malloy Memorial Service.
