William was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Joseph Asay and Sarah Ann Pedrick. William's family moved to Utah when they joined the LDS Church. William married Sarah Jane Fullmer on December 20, 1869 in Salt Lake City, Utah in the Endowment House. William also married Arminda Alice Hendricks on August 28, 1886 in Thatcher, Arizona. William later married Hildgarde Chlarson on March 3, 1889 in Saint George, Utah in the Saint George Temple. They were later divorced. William was a member of the Mormon Militia. William died in Thatcher, Arizona of Pneumonia and was buried the same day in the City Cemetery.
