Jean Frederick Taylor, 87, passed away Thursday, Sept. 16, 2004, at his home in Pharr.

He is survived by his wife Mary Lee; daughters, Sandra Krueger of Alamogordo, N. M. and Susan Hahn of San Juan; sons, Michael Taylor of Tularosa, N. M. and Jean Taylor Jr. of Pharr; brother, James Collins Taylor II of Cincinnati; sister, Molly Taylor of Pharr; and cousin, Doris Lisbony of Pharr.

Jean was preceded in death by his parents, James Collins and Mollie Estelle Taylor; brothers Mann King Taylor and Carbry Taylor.

Jean was born in Zapata, Texas, on April 4, 1917, moving to Mission with his family at the age 7. His great-grandparents Edward Dougherty of Dublin, Ireland, and Marcella Garcia of Monterrey, Mexico, and grandparents William Dougherty and Ellen Handy were among the early pioneers of the Rio Grande Valley.

Jean served in the Civilian Conservation Corp. and joined the Merchant Marines serving his country in WWII in the Pacific and Atlantic war zones from October 1943 to February 1946. He trained on the sailing ship Joseph Conrad and sailed on the Liberty Ships Yaquina Head, Edward G. Janeway, and the Lloyd S. Carlson. He worked in the oil field industry as a production foreman in South Texas, New Mexico, Libya, Indonesia and New Guinea.

Visitation will be held from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday, Sept. 20, 2004, at the Ric Brown Family Funeral Home in Mission. A memorial service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2004 at Ric Brown Family Funeral Home Chapel in Mission, Pastor Kirschner of St. Paul Lutheran in McAllen will officiate.

Jean was loved and will be missed by many.
