Vera Richards Nielsen died peacefully at home March 11, 1997, after a short illness.

She was born November 3, 1916, in Bountiful, Utah, to Heber Greene and Nora Rebecca Noall Richards, graduated in 1937 from the University of Utah, and married Arthur Hansen Nielsen in the Salt Lake Temple February 18, 1938.

Vera was a faithful, devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in every auxiliary, including as Relief Society President. She served with her husband in Israel for 2 1/2 years as a special representative for the Church, and assisted in obtaining final recognition and approval of the BYU Jerusalem Center. At the time of her final illness, she was an extraction missionary and special secretary to her bishop.
She was active in many areas of community service, including service as president of the Richards Family Genealogical Assoc., PTA president, and captain and secretary of the Laurelcrest Camp, Daughters of Utah Pioneers. Vera especially enjoyed singing with the Salt Lake Oratorio Society and other groups.

She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Arthur; sister, Helen R. Gardner; children, Ralph R. (Sharon); Marie Nielsen Schreiner; Paul R.; Heber C. (Carolyn); Clark R. (Becky R.); David R. (Becky Jane); Ruth Nielsen (Chris Moore); Joseph R. (Karen); Carole (Arlen) Cook; Barbara (Kelly) Richardson and additional family, Jack (Elfriede) Friend; 42 grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. Preceded in death by sisters, Afton, Pat, DeEtte; son, Arthur; and one granddaughter.

In addition to their own children, Arthur and Vera accepted into their hearts and homes many others from nations around the world, who lived with them as sons and daughters for times ranging from months to years. Vera nourished and nurtured each as her own. She is remembered as beloved wife, mother, and grandmother who put her family first.

Funeral services will be at noon (12 p.m.) Monday, March 17, in the Monument Park 1st and 2nd Ward Chapel, 1005 So. 2000 East. Viewing will be Sunday, March 15 from 6 to 8 p.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 255 So. 200 East, Salt Lake City and Monday 10:30 a.m. to 11:40 a.m. at Monument Park 1st and 2nd Ward Chapel prior to the funeral service. Interment: Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 So. Highland Dr.
