Thomas was the 5th of 6 children of George Yaryan and Rebecca Bailey. He was living at home with his parents in Fall Creek Township, Hamilton County, Indiana, in the 1850 census, and in Dahlonega Township, Wapello County, Iowa, in the 1860 census.
Thomas enlisted during the Civil War and served in the 10th Independent Battery, Wisconsin Light Artillery. He became a prisoner of war and died of starvation in South Carolina. His mother received a pension for his service.
