Herbert D. Hewitt, age 96 formerly of Newton Falls, passed away peacefully into eternal life on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at the Burton Health Care Center. He was born on July 31, 1921 in Newton Falls, OH the son of the late Charles L. & Anna Nettie (Brown) Hewitt.
 
Herbert married the love of his life, Betty Jane Hurd on September 12, 1947 and they enjoyed 60 years of marriage together until she passed away on January 19, 2008. He lived in Newton Falls for most of his life and, graduated from Newton Falls High School in the Class of 1939.
 
Herbert had lived most his life in Newton Falls working as a machinist for General Electric Ohio Lamp Division for 32 years before retiring in June of 1986. He was a member of the Army Air Corp serving during World War II.
He and his wife were also a members of the First Congregational Church in Newton Falls for over 60 years. Herbert loved animals, tinkering around with things, flying, mowing his lawn, boating, family vacationing, and spending time with his dog, "Katie". He also was an inventor, and built a lawn mower out of a VW bug. Herbert's favorite airplanes were the P-38, P-47 (the jug) and the P-51 Mustang because he worked on them as a mechanic during WWII.
 
Memories of Herbert will be carried on by his loving family; his daughter Jane & (Rev. James W.) Kerr of Canandaigua, NY; his 2 sons Kenneth & (Cindy) Hewitt of Madison, AL, James & (Lucy) Hewitt of Waxahachie, TX; his 4 grandchildren Bradley, Meghan, Rachel, Christopher; and 3 great-grandchildren: Miles, Henry, and Annika.
 
He is preceded in death by his parents, wife Betty, and one brother Harold Hewitt.
 
Calling hours will be held at the James Funeral Home in Newton Falls on Monday, June 11, 2018 from 6 to 8PM. Funeral Services will be at the First Congregational Church in Newton Falls on Tuesday, June 12, 2018 at 11:00am with Rev. Eric Bing officiating the service. Herbert will be laid to rest next to his wife, Betty at Lutheran Cemetery in Newton Falls.
