Florence Simon Beecher, 92 - Butler Art Institute named new addition in her honor

Mrs Florence Simon Beecher, 92, of 4290 Stratford Rd., civic and community leader, died of a heart ailment Friday morning at her home.

Mrs Beecher was born Dec 20, 1898, in Youngstown, Her parents were Hosea Simon and Una Lanterman Foster Simon Bakody. She was a graduate of Goucher College for Women. During World War II, she was the director of the Red Cross Canteen here. She was a member of the Youngstown Country Club, the Youngstown Club and the Youngstown Garden Club. She was a benefactor of the Mahoning Valley Historical Society and Lanterman's Mill in Mill Creek Park. She was also a contributor to Butler Institute of American Art, which named its new addition Beecher Court in her honor.

In 1985, when the YWCA named Mrs Beecher a woman of the year, a YWCA said, in part, "She has afforded an untold number of young people the opportunity for getting a higher education and has given extensive financial support to numerous causes and groups..." Much of the generosity was without fanfare, it was said.

Her husband, Ward, a former vice president and treasurer of Commercial Shearing, whom she married in 1923, died in 1970.

She leaves a daughter, Mrs Eleanor Beecher Flad of Liberty; two grandsons, Dr. Ward Beecher Flad of Mill Valley, Ca. and Erie L. Flad of Albany, Ca.; and four great-grandchildren. A brother, Willard Simon, is deceased.
