He was born on Jan. 25, 1909, in Vernal, Utah, to Edmond and Ursula Jane Hadlock Alger. He was educated in schools in Utah, before moving to the Twin Falls area.
He married Thelma Elverta Owens on July 6, 1931, in Twin Falls, and their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS Temple on March 19, 1949. Four children were born to this union: Elverta (Dale) Plott of Twin Falls, Earl Leroy "Al" (Wanda) Alger of Vista, Calif., Edith (Roger) Facer of Paul and Ida Jean Wilkinson of Draper, Utah.
He farmed most of his life west of Twin Falls and later moved into town, where he went into the drywall and decorating business. For a period of time, he worked for the Twin Falls School District. He was an avid hunter and fisherman, and enjoyed making macrames and 32-string belts.
He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many positions. He and his wife were dance directors for many years, and enjoyed working with the young people. Music and dancing were a big part of his life. They were also active in the genealogy program. He was known for his quick wit and sense of humor.
He was preceded in death by his parents; 11 brothers and sisters; and his wife, Thelma, who died on March 24, 2001.
In addition to his children, he had 15 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
