Cyrus Clarkson Lewis was born on July 9, 1817, as the only son of Dr. Jacob Lewis and Sarah Freeman in Middletown, Butler County, Ohio. He had three half siblings-Col. Ira Randolph Lewis, Mary Lewis (Cornell), Sarah Elizabeth Lewis (Garrison), and Cyrus Lewis whom died in his youth. Cyrus Clarkson Lewis married Mary Polly Brown February 18, 1841/1843 in Troy, Miami, Ohio. The couple had 9 children: Sarah Elizabeth Lewis 1848; Ira Lewis 1850; Baby Lewis 1851-1853 (died on the Oregon Trail); Caroline Lewis 1854; Albert Lewis 1856; Edwin Lewis 1859; Charles C Lewis 1861; Ella Mae Lewis 1863; and Frank Lewis 1864. The Cyrus Lewis Family traveled on the Oregon Trail in 1853 to Puget Sound settling south of Seattle on the Duwamish River. The eldest girls were abducted by Indians escaping with their lives during the 1855 Indian War and Battle of Seattle as friends were massacred along White River. Cyrus fought in the war to secure the release of his daughters. The family home was burnt by the Yakima Indians during the war, however Cyrus and his family were friends with Chief Sealth and Chief Olympus. Cyrus's daughter eloped with a neighbor Henry Valentine and was married by Chief Olympus. Polly passed away on June 20, 1876. After her death Cyrus went to live near Sarah in Rockwood, Multnomah, Oregon where he had a store and was the first postmaster. Later he moved to Springwater, Clackamas, Oregon once again having a store and also being a public notary. He went on to live with his daughter Ella and Sarah before he became too hard to handle with senility. He then went to live at the Oregon State Asylum, later known as Oregon State Hospital where he passed away on February 24, 1905 in Salem, Marion, Oregon. He was buried on the grounds in the Asylum Cemetery.
