Obituary

Alexander Joseph Desmarais journeyed home on the morning of November 19, 2010. With a million memories to hold her till she sees him again, his daughter Diedre Alexandria Desmarais will miss him and think of him every day for the rest of her life. Bart and Randi Desmarais are forever grateful for his constant presence and gentle support throughout the years. His daughter Barbara Anne Pelltier gave him the greatest gift as she touched his soul with her presence and love during the most important days of his life. His son, Rodney Desmarais was supported and loved during their time together. Also celebrating his life and cherishing his memory are, his loving sister Florence Blondeau [Regina], Lawrence and Mary Blondeau [Winnipeg], Armand and Rose Blondeau[Regina], Marie and Blaire Toney [Regina] and Lorraine Blondeau [Qu'Appelle]. Rejoicing and waiting for him in the House of our Lord are his father and mother Michel and Marie Anne Desmarais, his wife Alice Desmarais [Girlie], special nephews Kenneth and Clarence Blondeau, bother-in-law Edward Blondeau, his first wife Mary Desmarais and a son who passed in infancy. A special mention need be made for they too were waiting are Butch, Tisha, Charlie, Cypress, Peek-a-Boo, Lizzie and his favorite cat he just called Kitty. Alex was raised in the tiny Métis community of Lebret, Saskatchewan. He was one of the few fluent Michif speakers left and in his younger days he was known for his fiddle playing at the local dances and parties. He loved his whisky and Don Messer. He joined the Canadian Army in 1942 and served until 1946. He built a career as a Steelworker, was a member of United Steelworkers of America Union and was employed at Westeel/Westank Industries from 1954-1987. Upon retirement Alex and his wife Alice opened a small store at Grandview Beach, which operated until 1997. They made countless friends during those years and life at the Beach created wonderful memories he cherished always. Everyone who knew Alex could not help but adore him. He was quiet, kind and gentle and had a tremendous capacity for fun and friendship. He had the kind of humor that just snuck up on you and throughout his lifetime he touched the lives of countless individuals in his shy and unassuming ways. He was a wonderful human being and the world is a little lonelier without him. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the nurses of Ward 3D, Pasqua Hospital, who cared for him the last three days of his life. These wonderful ladies are fine examples of what nursing should be as their gentle touch and soft words soothed the painful transition for Alex. With patience and explanation they comforted us as they gently guided our family to acceptance of imminent loss of our beautiful father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. We miss him already. A FUNERAL MASS will be held at St. Peter Roman Catholic Church, 100 Argyle Street, Regina, SK on Tuesday, November 23, 2010 at 10:00 a.m. Family and friends are invited to view the online obituary and tributes page at www.regina-memorial.ca. Arrangements entrusted to Regina Funeral Home (306) 789-8850.
