Deanna S. Funderburg
Deanna (Dee) S. Funderburg died May 25, 2018 in Salt Lake City, Utah, age 94. She was born on November 5, 1923 to Byron J. Stirland and Medora Alice Grimmett in Moreland, Idaho. She was the eldest of four children and grew up in a loving family that valued education, curiosity, and creativity.
While in nursing school in Pocatello, Idaho, Dee met her first husband, Roland Nelson, with whom she had her first child, Michael Deems. She married her second husband, Bryant L. Hanson in Pocatello, Idaho in 1949. Together they had two children, Bonne, and Bryant Leif.
Dee earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from Idaho State University; a Master's degree in Education from Columbia University; and an EdD in Child Development from UCLA. She spent many years as a nurse and hospital supervisor, before making the transition to a teaching career focused on early children development. She was the Chair of Teacher Education and Liberal Arts at California State University, Dominguez Hills, where she retired as Professor of Education.
Dee was a lover of nature and the outdoors, and moved to the Sawtooth Mountains of Idaho after Bryant's passing in 1985. She was fortunate to find love once more, and married Jerry Funderburg in 1995. They spent their summers enjoying the beauty of the Sawtooths, and their winters fishing together in Mexico.
Dee was a passionate musician and played the piano, organ, flute, bassoon, and violin. She passed that love on to her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and received her first calling at age ten, as pianist for her ward primary. She happily served as pianist and organist in several wards for eight decades. She is survived by her children, Michael Hanson (Glendene), Bonne Kelly (Steven), and Leif Hanson (Connie), 14 grandchildren, and numerous great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Bristol Heights Ward chapel at 6375 North Royal Park Avenue in Boise, Idaho at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 9, 2018.
In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Dee's honor to your local food bank.
