JAMES WHEATLY Was born in 1826 in Indiana, then moved, as a child, to Kentucky where he remained until he turned 19. He came to Coles County in 1852, settling in sparsely populated Seven Hickory Twp. where he farmed 1,600 acres and raised livestock. In 1892, Wheatly helped organize the Charleston State Bank, becoming its president. He gave up the farm in 1894, and moved into Charleston where he lived until his death in 1903.
