Dorothy Elaine Hopkins, age 90 passed away peacefully on Wednesday, May 30, 2018 surrounded by loving family.
Dorothy was born in Buffalo, NY to parents Harmon Laban Clark and Esther Cook Clark. Dorothy grew up in Buffalo, NY, and graduated with a B.A. in Home Economics from Ohio Wesleyan University. She met her future husband, Malcolm Townsend Hopkins, at a church youth group in Delmar, NY. and the two married in 1949. Dorothy taught cooking and sewing to support her husband's completion of law school and overseas military duty. When Malcolm started a successful business career in New York City, the couple moved to Summit, NJ where she was active in the local community. They were able to enjoy extensive traveling with Malcolm's early career as Treasurer of Eastern Airlines and TWA. The couple raised two daughters, Sue and Nancy.
She moved to Asheville, NC where they built a home in Biltmore Forest in 1985. They later retired to San Antonio, TX in 2006.
Dorothy was passionate about Genealogical Research. Her passion for genealogy began as a hobby, tracing family history with her mother. Her library of work was published by numerous organizations and publishers in addition to being recognized by several National Organizations. She was thorough in documenting her lineage back to Charlemagne and William the Conqueror, in addition to several families on the Mayflower. She was a member of The Daughters of the American Revolution, The Society of Magna Carta Dames, The Mayflower Descendants, The Colonial Dames of the 18th Century, The New England Historical Society, The Genealogical Society of London, The National Genealogical Society and The Connecticut Genealogical Society.
Dorothy was a child of the Depression and affectionately known for her upstate "New York Grit." She was renowned for her gourmet cooking talents, her devotion to her family, and her organizational skills which she used to quietly help everyone around her. She was also passionately patriotic, never missing an opportunity to recognize a flag waving as she traveled.
After a life well lived, full of elegance and dignity, Dorothy is back in the arms of her beloved husband, Malcolm. Her family will miss her but could not be happier for her. Dorothy was kind, modest in her actions and generous with her love.
Dorothy was happily married for 67 years to Malcolm until his passing in 2016. She was a devoted and loving mother to her last days and is survived by three daughters, grandchildren, other relatives and many friends
