Clarissa was born on February 25, 1936, a daughter of the late William Haywood Garth (24 Dec 1890 - 12 June 1964) and Ruth Page Durrette Garth (29 May 1893 - 18 Jan 1950).
How they met – One day, young Clarissa went up the back road to buy a bicycle from Grace Maze. The night before Clarissa went to buy the bike she had a dream that she would meet a handsome man. As luck would have it, Grace’s good looking cousin John (who was nine years older than Clarissa) happened to be visiting Grace and their Grandmother, Cora Maze.
It was love at first sight. They courted and on June 30, 1954, Clarissa married the love of her life, John Rex Dudley. Among John’s many loving pet names for Clarissa was ‘my wild mountain flower.’ When John passed away on July 16, 2004, at age 77, his cousin Willa Mae Gill Jarvis paraphrased, ‘never has a man loved a woman more.’
Clarissa was also recently predeceased by her much-loved older brother, William Howard Garth.
Clarissa leaves her loving memories to be cherished by her devoted daughter, Martha Dudley of Hood; her loving son, Mark Dudley of Daytona Beach, Florida; and wonderful grandchildren, Dylan W. and Dalton R. Dudley, along with many dear cousins and family friends.
Clarissa was a beloved wife, mother, and home maker. She graduated from Madison County High School in 1954. Much later she returned to school to graduate with a degree in Practical Nursing with the Piedmont Tech Class of 1983.
Clarissa enjoyed working as an LPN at the Culpeper Baptist Home for many years. Gardening and planting tulips, daffodils and enjoying pets were her passion. Clarissa was also a founding member of the Madison County Republican Women in 1998.
A graveside funeral service will be held at 2 PM on Sunday, May 20, 2018, at Fairview Christian Church with Pastor Rob Nykamp officiating.
