Edwin Kenneth Chilcott, 96, passed away at his home in Nampa, ID on January 21, 2012.

Ed was born to Walter Grant Chilcott and Lula Mae Talbot Chilcott on April 1, 1915 at his family homestead at Brownlee in the hills above Sweet, ID. As a young boy Ed and his team of four horses worked on neighbors' farms trading for oats and hay for his family and attended a one room school house. While in high school he lived at the Skippen Ranch in Sweet milking cows and other chores for room and board until graduating in 1933 at Montour.

Soon after, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and drove mail truck to 25 camps in the back mountain country from Lewiston. Most of his life, 1936-1969 he spent logging in Idaho and Oregon, first with horses and then with his beloved trucks, last working for Art Hansen Logging in Horseshoe Bend. He retired from Idaho Concrete & Pipe in 1979.

He spent much time in lovingly caring for his neat garden and yard, always having roses and cut flowers blooming in time for Memorial Day. Horseshoe Bend honored him as Grand Marshal of the Logger's Days parade in 1986. Ed was the last survivor of the few brave men that floated logs down the North Fork of the Payette River to be loaded on the train. In 2010 & 2011 he was oldest pioneer present at the annual Pioneer picnic in Horseshoe Bend.

Ed and his traveling companion wife, Wendola, journeyed the western U.S., many state parks, lakes, mines, & harmonica festivals. Their last trip before selling the travel trailer was to Mount Rushmore at the age of 90.

Edwin is survived by his wife, Wendola; two daughters: Barbara (Jerry) Loftis, of Caldwell, ID, and Karla (Barry) Marlin, of Medford, OR; grandchildren: Les Smith, of Boise, ID, Randall Bowden, of Corpus Christi, TX, Cindy Hayes, of Apple Valley, CA, Jacquline Franks, of Murfreesboro, TN, Tonya, Jeremy, Jennifer and Adam Chilcott, of the Roseburg, OR area; 17 great-grandchildren and 10 great-great-grandchildren living in Oregon, Colorado & Japan.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents, Walter and Lula; brother, Theodore; sisters: Alta McDonough and Lena Biggers; sons: Kenneth and Ronnie; and grandson, Bobbie.

Everyone is invited to join us for a Memorial service and pot luck dinner at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Horseshoe Bend Senior Center, (109 Riverside St.).

Arrangements are under the direction of the Zeyer Funeral Chapel, Nampa. (467-7300)

Memorials may be sent to the Horseshoe Bend Historical Society, PO Box 342 Horseshoe Bend, ID 83629 in honor of our pioneer father.
