LEWIS Y. HERNDON, SON OF PHILIP & SARAH (HITCHCOCK) HERNDON:
Philip's & Sarah's son, Lewis Herndon, (of the 1886 biographical sketch in Goodspeed's "History of Tennessee...", Stewart Co TN, 1886, pp. 1305-1306), indeed followed in his father's footsteps, also serving as "magistrate," in Stewart Co TN. Identified in 1852 court & 1910 census as Lewis Y. Herndon, he served as an official in Stewart Co TN in various capacities from 1852-1894; (1) as estate administrator for relatives in 1852-53, 1857-58, 1865-67; (2) on Constable bond for District # 9 between 1 Nov 1858-1 Nov 1859; (3) from 1865 through 1894, Lewis was also Justice of the Peace, served as county poorhouse overseer, then county trustee, & tax collector. Before him, his father Philip Herndon had been Justice of the Peace for at least one earlier term in Stewart Co TN, performing marriages between 1846-1848, and being re-elected in 1848 prior to his sudden death.

LEWIS Y. HERNDON'S DAUGHTER SARAH, NAMED A SON LOUIS YOUNGER NOLIN:
HIS WW II DRAFT CARD DATA: Serial Number 1356, Name & Signature: Louis Younger Nolin, Birthdate: May 23, 1882, Residence: Tharpe, Stewart Co TN.
(REF: U.S., World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918, Tennessee, Stewart County, ALL, Draft Card N. URL: https://www.ancestry.com/discoveryui-content/view/23259861:6482?tid=53440451&pid=13511123373&hid=1005050621343, image 24 of 46.)

NOTE: I have no doubt that the given name for the grandson Lewis Franklin (son of Thomas Jefferson Herndon), was named after the grandfather, Lewis, but evidence shows clearly that he was NOT given his grandfather's middle name.

MY CONCLUSION: After conducting far more than "reasonably exhaustive" research, I have come to the following conclusion: Based on the fact that he used ONLY the middle initial Y. in extant lifetime documents, and in absence of any lifetime evidence to the contrary, it seems clear that the ASSUMPTION our Lewis Herndon middle name Franklin, is an unsupported, wholly mistaken, modern invention, misapplied without support of any historical evidence. Therefore, all modern attribution of "Franklin" as a middle name for the Stewart Co TN Justice, Lewis Herndon (1824-1914), seems purely an assumption based on his grandson, Lewis Franklin "Tump" Herndon, having that middle name. This is further supported by the fact that the grandson did NOT go by the appellation (II). Therefore, from the lifetime documents I have found, (Census, Church, Newspaper, and Probate), which all bear zero middle name, and using the middle initial Y., as it stands, I have concluded there is zero support for the middle name Franklin. Inasmuch as he descends from a family who widely used the name Younger among their children, and he had the middle initial "Y" and also had a grandson named Louis Younger Nolin, it seems far more probable that his full middle name was Younger. Yet, lacking that absolute proof, I am standing by the middle initial "Y." (but would feel comfortable, adding the full "Younger"). Therefore, in my family tree, I have added the correct initial and deleted the erroneously-attributed middle name from the Stewart Co TN Justice of the Peace, Lewis Y. Herndon (1824-1914).
