William was the first of the DeFoor children to be born in Gilmer County, Georgia.

William & Mary Ann Pence reportedly married on Aug 2, 1865; marriage record not found. Mary Ann was daughter of Leroy & Ann Olivet Waters Pence. William & Mary Ann DeFoor had eighteen children.

On Apr 22, 1909, William DeFoor married for the second time - to Anna Yother Rittenhouse. (Annie Yother & John R. Rittenhouse were married on Feb 28, 1897.) William & Annie had three sons: Frank R. (or Martin), Daniel, and Roosevelt. No further information on Annie or the three children.

A major difficulty in researching the DeFoor family is the inconsistency in spelling the surname. Census records, marriage records, and inscribed tombstones rarely match exactly. The two most common spellings used on tombstone are Defore and DeFoor (with or without the capitalization of the "F"). One must also accept that given names found in census data and/or marriage records may not exactly match name on tombstone. Dates of birth found on tombstones also may not match ages in census data.
