Mary was born about 1740 (reportedly), the daughter of Stephen Gapen and Mary Gawson. She married first to a Mr. Pierson. His first name is given in a family narrative as Stephen, but there is reason to think this might be a confusion in the tradition between her father's name and that of her first husband. Mary and Mr. Pierson had four daughters:

1) Martha Pierson, married first to Ezekiel Everett and second to John Gordon--linked below;
2) Emma Pierson, married Jared Brush (as his first wife);
3) Huldah Pierson, married Samuel Lanning; and
4) Elizabeth Pierson, married first to Edmund Cain and second to Jared Brush (as his second wife)--linked below.

The widow Mary Gapen Pierson married second to Aaron Mershon, probably about 1769. They had three children before Aaron was killed at the Battle of Long Island during the Revolutionary War:

5) Jane Mershon, born about 1771, married William Hartupee;
6) John Mershon (1773-1851); and
7) Peter Mershon (1775-about 1809), who is thought to have married Deborah.

Mary married third to Israel Everett by New Jersey license dated 8 May 1778. They had two children:

8) Nicholas C. Everett (1778-1861); and
9) Mary Amelia Everett (born about 1784), who married first to Zachariah Gapen and second to Israel Dalbey.

Seven of Mary's nine known children went west into Pennsylvania and Ohio. Mary is reported to have spent her last years with her daughter Jane Hartupee in Canonsburg, PA.

For more information about Mary and the difficulties she overcame during the Revolutionary War, see Grace L. O. Mershon's Our Pioneers East and West of the Mississippi: Family Sketches - Mershon (1949-57), "Peter Mershon and His Descendants," p. 29-31.
