Eldon Gene King, 65, of Carterville and formerly of Ashland, passed away Thursday, May 17, 2018, at Herrin Hospital, following a severe stroke. Eldon was in Herrin Hospital, from May 9, until his passing. The staff at Herrin Hospital exceeded every possible expectation, providing excellent care, throughout Eldon's time there. Hospice of Southern Illinois staff and volunteers provided excellent and timely assistance.

Eldon was born Nov. 23, 1952, in Jacksonville, the son of Walter Murl and Irene Geiss King. He graduated from Ashland Community High School in 1970. He graduated from Southern Illinois University with a Bachelor's Degree in Agriculture, specializing in horticulture, in 1974.

Eldon lived in St. Petersburg, FL, from 1976 to 1992, working in landscape maintenance. In 1992, he moved to Marion IL. He had a life-long interest in horticulture, including turf management (lawns and golf courses). He did well in accounting courses (at Logan Community College) and worked for a tax-accounting company, from 1994 to 1998. All during the 1990's, Eldon and his brother visited nearly every golf course and garden center, within a 120-mile radius from Marion IL, learning everything possible, about plant management (turf and landscape). Starting in 1998, Eldon enjoyed "using his green thumb" as a groundskeeper at Logan Community College in Carterville. He worked there until his retirement in 2014. Eldon greatly enjoyed his work at Logan College, and he greatly appreciated all of his many friends at the college.

Eldon is survived by his mother, Irene King of Ashland; and his brother, Marvin King of Marion. Eldon had great affection and appreciation for his many aunts, uncles, and cousins, on both his father's and mother's sides of the family. He was preceded in death by his father on Aug. 22, 1998.

A graveside service will be held 1:30 pm Friday, May 25, 2018, at Chandlerville Cemetery. A visitation will be held 5-7 pm Thursday at The Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Ashland. Casual dress is suggested.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to Chandlerville Cemetery, Ashland First Baptist Church for youth programs, or donor's choice.
