Harry Sellards was a jack of all trades and master of each. He was equally at home as a grocer, carpenter and landscaper. Sellards of Apopka, who operated Sellards Nursery until three months ago, died Sunday of cardio-respiratory arrest. He was 95. "It was a large nursery for a guy over 90 years old," said his son, Jack Sellards of Apopka. "He had about 5,000 plants there." Everything for landscaping, from camellias to ligustrum, thrived under Harry Sellards' green thumb, his son said. And his father did it all by himself. At 17, he opened a gas station and sundries stores in Wayne, W.Va. The year was 1923. "In two years, he had enough money to build a home before he married my mother," Jack Sellards said. "It's still standing." But Harry Sellards' mainstay was the grocery business. He operated a grocery store in West Virginia until he moved his family to Florida in 1945. With seven children to support, he turned carpenter and worked at Patrick Air Force Base. He also worked as a trim carpenter on new homes going up in Azalea Park in Orlando. By 1955, he was ready to go back into the grocery business. He operated Sellards' Grocery, a neighborhood store at the corner of Edgewater Drive and Forest City Road, for 10 years. When he "retired" in 1965, it was to go into the nursery business. Harry Sellards was a member of First Baptist Church of Apopka. He also is survived by sons, Harry Leon Sellards of DeLand, David Sellards of Clermont and John Sellards of Apopka; daughters, Berta Hall of Winter Park, Glenna Deloach of Ocala and Linda Stafford of Apopka; 33 grandchildren; 54 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren. Baldwin-Fairchild Funeral Home in Apopka is handling arrangements.
