Violet was born in the Marye area of Spotsylvania County and was the daughter of the late Billy and Pearl Hart. She was the third of their four children. Violet married Bobby Payne in 1957 until his death in 1985. After raising her family, she worked as an administrative assistant in the Fredericksburg area. She was an avid gardener, canner, and seamstress.Violet devoted many years to the care of her mother, Pearl. She was a devout Christian who was a member of Spotswood Baptist Church and her greatest ministry was loving children.
Survivors include her three children, Leigh P. Goodwin, Robert Warren Payne Jr. (Lisa) and James Payne (Velvet); five grandchildren, Elliott, Belle, R.W., Elisabeth, and William; two great-grandchildren, Jayden and Summer; and sister Shirley Carter. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Annie Mae Acors and a brother, William Hart.
A service will be held at noon on Thursday, May 24 at Covenant Funeral Service, Fredericksburg. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Interment will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2217 Princess Anne St., Ste. 106-1F, Fredericksburg, VA 22401 and Operation Smile, 3641 Faculty Blvd., Virginia Beach, VA 23453.
