Husband of Elzira Sink and son of James D. Saul (1796-1879) and Esther Gibson (1799-1874). He enlisted as a Private in Company K, 42nd Infantry (Virginia) of the Confederate Army on 17 Jun 1861 at Rocky Mount, Franklin County, Virginia. He was killed at the Battle of Cedar Mountain, Virginia on 9 Aug 1862 and was buried on the battlefield. John and Elzira Saul were married on 7 Feb 1848 in Franklin County, Virginia and had three children: William Terry, Demoss F., and Josephine Saul.
