He was born June 17, 1947, to Archie Mael and Bonnie (Willoughby) Mael. Attending schools in Lewiston, he joined the U.S. Army immediately following graduation. He became a pay specialist and was deployed to Vietnam in 1966 for a year.
He met and wrote to Linda Hranac before deployment, and the two were married in July 1967. A 50th wedding anniversary celebration was held in July of 2017.
Replacing the summer hires at the Potlatch Corp. lumber mill in September of 1968, he retired after 42 years as a certified lumber grader and quality control supervisor in surfacing.
Always a family man, he loved his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He enjoyed raising a garden and camping. He did some hunting and fishing for sturgeon. He volunteered for a short time for fish and wildlife to catch sturgeon, tag them for records and release them. He collected hundreds of fishing lures found during walks along the river. Grandpa Joe Hranac taught him to pan for gold. The two of them shared the hobby until Joe's passing. Bob continued most of the years as a solitary miner.
Bob is survived by his wife; daughter; son; grandchildren; and great-grandchildren. He also is survived by his specially loved sister and her husband, and many other family members. He was preceded in death by both parents; stepdad Ervin Cruickshank; sister Loretta Hanson; son Timothy; and grandson Garrett Thrash.
A private family inurnment for Bob will be held Saturday at Vineland Cemetery in Clarkston.
Please join family at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Beachview Park in Clarkston in a joint memorial honoring Bob and his brother-in-law, Greg Hranac. Memorial donations in Bob's name may be made to Relay for Life.
