Mabel L. Johnson, 60, Teacher at Machan

Mrs. Mabel Lawson Johnson, 60, a teacher the past 18 years at William T. Mechan School, died yesterday in Doctors Hospital.
Mrs. Johnson, 4414 E. Flower, organized the Junior Garden Club here in 1956. Under her direction the club received 10 State Federation Garden Club awards and national recognition.
She was an enthusiastic gardener, sharing the interest of her husband, Ralph, in the American Iris and American Rose societies.
Mrs. Johnson was graduated from Baylor University and did postgraduate work at the Universities of Tennessee and Wisconsin. She taught at public schools in Texas and during World War II she served with the American Red Cross as recreational director at Ft. Lewis, Wash., Letterman General Hospital at San Francisco, and at the Ft. Whipple and Phoenix Veterans Administration hospitals. Born in Lorena, Tex., she had resided in Phoenix 19 years.
Services will be at 10 a.m. tomorrow in Paradise Chapel, 3934 E. Indian Shool. Friends may call from 4 to 9 p.m. today at the mortuary. Burial will be in Green Acres Cemetery, Scottsdale.
Survivors include her husband and a sister and a brother, who live out of state.
The family suggests contributions for the Student Scholarship for Valley Garden Center, 1809 N. 15th Ave., or Memorial Aware of the American Iris Society, 2118 N. 24th St.
