Paul Engel, Ph.D., 81, Metairie, La., died Monday, May 20, 2013.
He was born July 8, 1931, in Grainfield to Peter and Amelia (Rupp) Engel. He was a 1949 graduate of St. Joseph's College and Military Academy. He attended St. Benedict's College in Atchison.
He later joined the Benedictine Order and became a priest [as Rev. Paulinus, O.F.B.]. While with the Benedictine Order he obtained a Ph.D. from Yale University. After 17 years as a Benedictine Priest he was dispensed of vows and later married.
Prior to retirement, he worked in the area of genetics, published multiple articles and was involved in research for several companies and Department of Agriculture. He enjoyed traveling, dancing, cooking and LSU football. He was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend.
Survivors include his wife, Kathy Mueller- Engel, Metairie; a son, Jeff; a daughter, Jennifer Murphy; a brother, Wilfred Engel, Oakley; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his siblings, Clarence, Flizita, Ignatius, Henry, Joseph, Mary Adeline, Mary, Ralph, and Felix.
Services were May 31, 2013, in Metairie.
