Emil Winkler was born August 12, 1858 at Cologne, MN. He is the son of Theresa (Teuber) and Ignatius Winkler. Ignatius and his family emigrated from Lindewiese, Silesia, Germany about the year 1855.

Mary (Schneider) Winkler was born June 13, 1861 at Masillion, OH. She is the daughter of Maria (Reidel) and Andreas Schneider. Andreas Schneider's parents also came from Lindewiese, Silesia, Germany. When Mary was six weeks old she moved with her parents to St. Bonifacius, MN. At age nine the Schneider family moved to Lake George, MN, via covered wagon and oxen team. Mary grew to adulthood in the Lake George area.

Emil and Mary were married February 3, 1885 at Spring Hill, MN. After their marriage they homesteaded on a tract of land in section 34, Raymond Township, almost across the road from Emil's uncle John Teuber. On the farm Emil and Mary built a large brick house and raised a family of eight children: John, Rosa, Barney, Anna, Regina, Frank, Henry, and Anthony (Anton). This farm southwest of Padua, in 1992 was the farmsite owned by Don Moening. The 80 acres west of them was owned by Mary's parents. They also owned and lived on the farm today owned by Albert Jansen.

Emil Winkler died at age 52 of a heart attack. The family remained on the farm ten more years. In 1920 Mary Winkler sold the farm and had an auction sale of the personal property. She purchased a home in Brooten, MN. She continued to live there the rest of her life. When Mary sold the Padua farm the family members went their own way. John, Barney, Anna, Frank, and Henry moved to Mahnomen, MN, Regina to Minnespolis, Anton was deceased, and Rosa had married Frank Teuber and they were farming on the Teuber farm next door. Later Frank and Rosa moved to Mahnomen also, and farmed by Rosa's brothers. During the school year Frank and Rosa's girls: Regina, Irene, Leona, and Lucille would come to Brooten and live with their grandma Mary Winkler and attend Brooten High School. There was no school bus service to Mahnomen or Fosston when the Teuber girls were of high school age. Anna, who had went to Mahnomen with her brothers, became engaged to Joe Rooney who lived at International Falls, MN sometime after 1925. The wedding never materialized, and Anna moved to Brooten to live with her mother Mary. Anna passed away July 1982 and is buried in Brooten.

Mary Winkler passed away on June 14, 1946. She was brought back to Padua to be buried by her husband. Emil and Mary's son, Anton and a grandson Norbert Teuber are buried in Padua. Emil's uncle and aunt John and Magdalena Teuber, and Mary's relative Helena (William) Rooney are also buried in Padua.
