Claudia Lee Baggs, age 66, of Jacksonville, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on February 3, 2017. The graciousness of spirit that defined her life of faith also characterized her courageous battle against cancer. Even in her death, Claudia would want all to know that nothing is too great, too much, or too exceptional for the love of Jesus Christ to overcome.

Claudia was born in Jacksonville, Florida on July 1, 1950 to Mrs. Betty S. Lee and the late Thomas D. Lee, Jr. She graduated from Wolfson High School and Valdosta State University where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi sorority. During her last year at Valdosta State, Claudia married Charles C. Baggs. The couple spent two years in Athens, Georgia then settled in Charles’ hometown of Camilla, Georgia where they started a family. There, Claudia focused her time on raising their two sons and finding ways she could show the love of Jesus to the community around her. She volunteered in the Preschool Department of Hopeful Baptist Church and served as a teacher’s aide at Westwood School, her sons’ elementary school. In 1985, she and her family moved to Jacksonville, Florida where she worked with her family’s business, Lee and Cates Glass, until she retired in 2001. For over 30 years Claudia was an active member of Southside Baptist Church where she served on many committees and as a volunteer in the Preschool Department.

By far, her most treasured times were those spent with her family. Claudia’s children describe her as graceful, benevolent, and delicate in a way that seems too perfect for this world. As gentle as she was, she epitomized strength and courage as she prayed for her family, loved those around her, and gave unselfishly. Her favorite Bible verse was 3 John 1:4 – “I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth.” Claudia embodied this truth daily and hoped in her life that people would not see her, but Christ’s redemptive love in her.

Claudia is survived by her loving husband of 45 years, Charles C. Baggs and their two children, Andy Baggs (Leah) and Lee Baggs (Stacie); six grandchildren: Taylor Baggs, Redlee Baggs, Christian Baggs, Presley Baggs, Ashby Baggs and Paislee Baggs; her mother, Betty Lee; four sisters: Sheri Braddy (Chris), Becky Hall, Donna Garner (Bob), Amy Gurr (Mike); one brother, Tom Lee III (NeeCee); her mother-in-law Betty Wingate; a sister-in-law Charlotte Brunton, nine nieces, eight nephews, twelve great nieces and nephews, many cousins as well as close friends. She was predeceased by her father, Thomas D. Lee, Jr.

A service to celebrate Claudia’s life will be held at Southside Baptist Church, 1435 Atlantic Boulevard, at 2:00 pm on Friday, February 10, with Reverend Gary Webber officiating. The family will receive friends following the service in the Maguire Fellowship Center at the church. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to: Preschool Ministry - Southside Baptist Church at 1435 Atlantic Blvd. Jacksonville, Florida 32207; The Baggs Family Cancer Endowment for the Baptist/MD Anderson Clinic - Baptist Health Foundation, 841 Prudential Dr. Suite 1300, Jacksonville, Florida 32207; or Community Hospice of Northeast Florida, 4266 Sunbeam Rd, Jacksonville, Florida 32257.
