The son of James Babb Sr. and Cinthia Jones Babb was born in Nansemond and raised in Holland. He died in Franklin. During the Civil War he served Company I of the 13th Regiment of Virginia Cavalry. He was wounded and made a prisoner of war. Standing six feet tall, the farmer had a light complexion with gray eyes and dark hair.
